Review: Joe was well received in its American premiere at Austins SXSW Film Festival. David Gordon Green film based on the novel by Larry Brown, was shot locally in the Austin area. The film is a dark, brooding, intense and mostly depressing. History of local wood craftsman? Joe - who is trying to save a 15-year-old Drifter from an abusive alcoholic father is violent and disturbing, and we know from the outset that there is no way to really end well. I found the film too dark and a little too slow as it moves to what seems an inevitable end. I think it could use some changes to speed up the pace a bit. Productivity Nicolas Cage foreman and young Tai Sheridan? fresh from his success in the dirt with Matthew McConaughey? fine. In a way, it changes the characters in Koto, where Tai Sheridans character tries to save the old; in Joe's situation is the opposite. The film is hard to watch at times and can hardly be called pleasant, but the story is still strong. It is hard to imagine that such a dark film will get many cinematic success. Green often pushes the locals in his film. In a sad, but perhaps an appropriate investigation, Green quit the local homeless, Gary Poulter, playing an important role in alcoholic father. Poulter died on the streets of Austin, two months after the end of recording. It is a powerful film, but I doubt that I would ever want to watch it again. |
